Connect With Your Purpose

Bud Caddell (blog “What Consumes Me“) is someone I have been following for a while. He started a new consulting company and I thought I would reach out to see if there were partnership opportunities. He is in his 30’s but suddenly feeling his mortality–see “The Merchant of Death is Dead“–so his application process asked you to write an obit as a way to connect with your purpose.

Stay Healthy and Curious

Here is what I gave Oct-20-2014 (clearly a day I had too much time on my hands).

Sean K. Murphy Obituary (Draft As of Oct-20-2014): Devoted husband, father, and grandfather with an lifelong interest in entrepreneurship. His advice was sought by friends and acquaintances when facing serious personal or business challenges. He held a variety of jobs in both startups and large firms, working in both engineering and marketing/sales roles but he always kept one eye on the horizon for changes coming: not only opportunities but threats. An avid reader and writer, Mr. Murphy said that he wanted to explore the 2040’s on foot as shorthand for his desire not only to remain conscious and healthy but also curious. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, three children, and 6 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers donations are encouraged to the Presbyterian Church and the Salvation Army.

For me to be married 45 years would give me until 76, my stretch goal is 86 to 90 but there you have it. I am not feeling unwell or pessimistic, I share this as a way to connect with your purpose, your mileage may vary.

“Curiosity is one of the most permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect.”
Samuel Johnson

A Quick Answer to My “Connect With Your Purpose”

I got a quick answer:

Sean, well written obit, my friend. We’re a bit swamped at the moment, so let me apologize in advance for a slow response time. Your email is incredibly kind and thoughtful.
More soon. /b

I wrote back: “I am not looking to join your team full time, but I am interested in finding ways to collaborate.” But he has subsequently maintained radio silence and I suspect he has moved on. His new application now asks you, “If you were suddenly made the CEO of Uber what would you change?” A substantially less thought provoking question
